CASE STUDY – GUARDIAN WOMEN SELF DEFENCE COURSE
Guardian Women (associated with Guardian Defence) is a gym in Brunswick, Melbourne. They are focused on teaching self defence classes in a highly inclusive environment to adults and children. Zunami is the head instructor of Guardian Women, committed to empowering women to stand up against violence against women.
In order to expand their reach to help women outside of their local area, a course outline was created that they wanted to deliver via video. The videos were designed to cover not only a range of potentially life-saving techniques, but also how to avoid a physical confrontation by understanding the psychology behind a growing situation.
WHAT WE DID
The head instructors at Guardian Defence and Guardian Women are both highly experienced, and so only a small degree of tweaking was needed to the overall structure and content of the course. Having studied other styles of martial arts before and had lots of experience with filming fight sequences for film, I was able to provide input on how to visually cover the techniques they wanted to demonstrate.
A range of women was represented in this course, emphasising the message that anyone with the time and willingness can learn these techniques, no matter your age, size, or level of fitness. The filming location was not ideal, with the gym being a large open metal structure with plenty of echo. To mitigate that, we got creative and built a makeshift sound-stage using blankets and crash mats that they had on premises. This proved highly effective, and saved the client thousands of dollars in hiring a sound studio for 4 days. Wireless microphones were also used so that Zunami was able to move as she needed whilst explaining each technique. The icing on the cake was the creation of the Guardian Women intro sequence. It has plenty of attitude to spur women into action.
The editing of the initial draft of the 68-part course took about 2 weeks, and the client was extremely happy with the quick turnaround and the quality of the result.
